The Label Worx Guide to Miami Music Week!

In case you hadn't realised, it's almost time for the entire electronic music industry to descend on Miami for what is one of our favourite weeks of the year. The Winter Music Conference (WMC) and Miami Music Week (MMW) take place at the same time and are an opportunity to get yourself out there and actually meet people. It's easy to forget that there's an entire world beyond the email inbox, but we can't emphasise just how productive it can be when you're meeting people face-to-face (and hitting the odd pool party too, obvs).

If you've thought ahead, you should have your flight booked and somewhere to stay planned - what next? We've done our fair share of Miami trips so here's a few tips on how to make the most of your week.

MMW or WMC? - The conference itself is a great place to find out more about key issues in the industry, and there are some fantastic talks and panels on during the week. That said, in our experience the conference isn't always the best place to 'talk shop' - if you can get backstage or arrange to meet people at parties, they're a great place to do your networking and you never know who you'll bump into while you're there.

Why are you going? - It's easy to get lost with all the options available to you and find yourself spending a lot of money being very unproductive. Decide what you want to get out of the trip and work out a way to achieve it - do you want to get your music to certain people? Do you want to try and work with a particular brand? Do you just want to get your face known by the DJs you send promos to?

Make the connection - We've found that Miami is a great place to make connections, but not the best place to sell either yourself or your product. Make time to grab a beer with people and spend time getting to know them - this way, when you get home you can talk business over email without worrying if they'll reply to a stranger or not.

Make a plan - It might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who turn up to Miami without any plans at all. You've got a good portion of the music industry staying in the same city as you for a week. You don't need to have every minute scheduled, but it helps if you have some meetings arranged and have an idea of which parties you'd like to hit. Let people know you're heading out there beforehand so you can fit into their schedules and work out which parties are happening on which days, so you don't miss the important ones.

Guestlist - We can't stress this one enough, but make sure you've sorted tickets or guestlist for parties before you arrive. Most events sell out and you'll have no chance at all of sorting guestlist while you're out there. Quite often, parties are over-sold, so no matter who you are - if the party is full and the fire department turns up, you ain't getting in. Be prepared for this.

Pace yourself- We've all been there, especially when there are SO many good parties to check out, but if you overdo it on the first night, you'll regret it. Trust us on that one! Miami is probably the easiest place to burn out - it's 30c the weather is great, the beers are flowing, the atmosphere is incredible and everyone's having a great time - if you don't look after your body and mind, you'll find you've wasted a lot of money hiding away in bed feeling sorry for yourself.

You can find out a full list of the events taking place on the MMW website.

If you're heading to Miami and want to meet the Label Worx team - let us know and we'll see you on South Beach.
