Starting a record label is easy - making it a success is the difficult part.
All successful labels are built on the same solid foundations and in our new Label Management 101 series, we'll explain what they are and how you can apply them to your own label.
You can find answers to most questions via the articles on our Knowledge Base, but first of all, let's look at the language of record labels and some of the common terms you'll encounter in the music industry.
DSP - Digital Service Provider
A DSP or Digital Service Provider is a company that Label Worx has connected to for the delivery of music-based content.
These could be stores such as Beatport and Traxsource, or streaming platforms like Spotify, YouTube and Deezer.
ISRC - International Standard Recording Code
An ISRC is an identification system for sound and music video recordings.
Every track should have its own unique ISRC which is used to identify that recording for royalty payment.
Label Worx provides these free-of-charge, but you can also apply for your own ISRC allocations prefix and enter this into the Label Worx system.
Single, EP or Album? - Release Format
Your releases will be listed under one of three categories: Single, EP or Album.
A Single is a release containing one to three songs that are under 10 minutes each.
An EP contains four to six songs with a total running time of 30 minutes or less.
An Album is a release that contains over 30 minutes of music, a continuous DJ mix, or six different tracks from the same artist.
Pre-Save - Marketing Tool
A Pre-Save link is the streaming equivalent of a 'pre-order'.
Fans can add the track to their virtual library ahead of the release date so that they can listen to it as soon as it becomes available to stream.
Pre-Save links can be used for platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer, and are a valuable marketing tool to drive engagement and momentum ahead of the release date.
Exclusive - Exclusive Release
Making a release exclusive to a specific DSP means that fans will not be able to stream or purchase it on any other platform during the period of exclusivity.
DSP-exclusives have extra benefits like additional opportunities for exposure within the platform, or higher royalty rates.
An exclusive can help you focus your marketing campaign to maximise success, but it can also limit the potential audience for your track so be strategic!
