How to make the most out of your trip to IMS Ibiza/Movement Detroit

We love any event that brings the industry together, and next week there are two big ones taking place. With plenty of sun, sea and unlimited networking opportunities, it's not surprising that Ibiza's IMS is one of our favourite conferences of the year, whilst over in Detroit, Movement will be ticking boxes for techno-lovers from all over the world.

IMS takes place between 22nd and 24th May, and Movement from 25th to the 28th. Both events give you the rare chance to meet many of dance music's leading players, both in front of and behind the scenes, as industry figureheads congregate in Ibiza and Detroit to discuss all aspects of the industry. Between the two events, you've got several days' worth of conferences, panels and music. Whilst Movement is all about the music, IMS will present in-depth discussions on mental health, diversity and examining club culture with the intention of bringing about positive change and progress. Basically, we can promise you that there's plenty going on that's worth being at either event for.

As always, there's so much happening at events like these that it's crucial you come prepared to make the most out of your time. Having been there and done them both a few times ourselves, here are a few key things you should keep in mind before heading to Ibiza or Detroit next week:

Be organised: You need to have a plan of action before heading to big events like IMS and Movement. Work out what your goals are, what conferences or events you want to attend, arrange meetings with contacts you wish to build relationships with and of course, select a couple of parties you wish to network at.

Create goals: Always set yourself a few goals you'd like to accomplish. It's a very busy few days and it's so easy to lose yourself without structure. You're investing a lot of time and money in attending, so ideally, you'd like to benefit from such dedication. By identifying a few targets, it's easier for you to decide who to meet with and when in order to achieve that goal.

Make appointments: Everyone attending IMS or Movement will be extremely busy, either with meetings or conferences, therefore it is pivotal you arrange a meeting time with your desired contacts before arriving. Scroll through your contacts, decide who can add value to your mission and request a meeting with them - also be realistic with your meetings.

Your network is your net worth: Make sure you utilise your network! This is the gateway for many more opportunities for you. Because you already have a history with these contacts, it makes it easier for you to arrange meetings with people you can't arrange yourself; arrange guest list to networking parties and most importantly, it enables you to expand your network further.

Pace yourself: Ibiza is still the party capital and Detroit is certainly not a chilled city during Movement, but that doesn't mean go out and party hard every night, there's plenty of important discussions and networking opportunities to be had during each event and you'll only kick yourself later if you miss them because of a hangover.

Drink plenty of water: We say it every time, but it's important!

Never be afraid of introducing yourself: If you find yourself with some spare time which hasn't been allocated to meetings or conferences, take advantage of different networking events and go and introduce yourself to different people, you never know who you'll meet and where that introduction may lead.

Whilst we're discussing introductions, our head of A&R at Label Worx, Simon Birkumshaw, will be in attendance at IMS and will be available to chat about anything label-related. Contact us to book a meeting.

And if you're in Detroit for Movement, hit up Matt or Dom if you'd like to arrange a meeting. Contact us to book a meeting.
