How To Accelerate Your Label

Record labels are our bread and butter. Our team has an expert understanding of every aspect of running a label, and because we work with so many, we're often first to know about any new technologies, platforms, legislation, revenue opportunities and everything else label-related that would have an impact on how a label needs to be run in order to be successful. As you can imagine, it's a full-time job in itself and a steep learning curve if running your label isn't your main focus.

We've found that most people start labels because they love the music - everything else is secondary. However, when running a label, all that boring stuff behind the scene is actually essential if you want to turn that hobby into a legitimate business. Naturally, Label Worx have a way to make your life easier - we call it 'Accelerate', and we sat down our Senior Label Relations and A&R man, James Macpherson to tell us all about it.

Hi James - can you explain what the Accelerate service is in as few words as possible?


Time is often said to be the one thing money can't buy. Accelerate gives you exactly that, your time back!

What aspects of the day-to-day running of a label do you handle?

We try and make sure we handle as many of the standard admin tasks involved in a release's 'life cycle' as possible. We ensure that the release is correctly uploaded to our distribution system and has perfect metadata. Relevant ISRC & UPC/EAN codes are assigned. We would then make sure this is archived and accessible to the label for their records.

We make sure that your release is targeted to the correct stores, with relevant release date(s). Any streaming strategies are discussed and implemented. we coordinate sales reports and marketing drivers and then pitch for features/playlist inclusion at all relevant stores.

We also upload your tracks to SoundCloud and YouTube to your desired specification and timeframes. With those uploads, we ensure that everything is monetised (where possible) and all possible actions within those platforms are maximised.

If you're a label using our other service, Royalty Worx, then this is where Accelerate really comes in to its own, as we will do all of the work involved with Royalty Worx for you. We're big believers in labels making sure their artists are accounted to and everything is as transparent as possible. It's an element of running a label that no one likes, so leave it to the experts.

Wow, that's quite a lot - what is left for the client to do?

Accelerate allows labels to focus on what they do best: the music. That might be in the studio or hunting down that perfect track to sign. If you don't have to worry about all the administrative tasks that come with a release, it frees you up in other aspects of the role. Labels can then also use this time to focus on the promotional side of things. You can have the best track in the world but without the right promotion, it can fall short.

Do you automatically keep on top of any new opportunities for a label to exploit, like new streaming services for example?

Obviously, the advantage of letting Label Worx run the administrative side of a label is that we're often informed of new projects in advance of launch. We also have the advantage of being able to analyse strategies over a number of labels, giving us more precise feedback. Labels using the Accelerate service are often the first to hear this news and first to implement.

It sounds like Accelerate makes life a lot easier, can the client still have input in the areas you look after, or do they relinquish full control once they sign up?

Of course. We're here to help, not dictate. We will often discuss plans with the label and we will advise strategies to take, but ultimately the final decision is with the label themselves.

Is signing up to Accelerate the answer to a successful label, or is there more that can be done as well?

It's not a 'Golden Ticket' to success. It's important to outline that. There is still work that a label needs to do, and the most important thing is the actual music itself. However, it will leave you in a nice position to do the label work without the stress or hassle of all the administrative tasks.
