Signing the track was the easy part, but with release day now on the horizon your thoughts should turn to promo plans and making sure that this is the biggest track that the world has ever heard. The old saying 'fail to plan, plan to fail' couldn't be more appropriate when it comes to running a label - luckily, Label Worx has your back. We've put together a checklist of the most important things you need to be thinking about in the run up to release day - it's by no means exhaustive, but if you're ticking the boxes below then you're definitely doing it right. And remember that we're always here for a chat if you want to discuss your release plans to double check that you've got all bases covered.

SUBMISSION:

Deliver Early - When applying for a feature it is important that you set your release to 'final' at least 4 - 5 weeks prior to release date. This gives the store's A&R team a good chance at listening to the release to decide if they wish to feature it. Submissions received 14 days or less before the release date will not be eligible for any feature placement, and will appear on the stores without any consideration.

Spotify & Shazam - If you have key radio play and support coming up, it's important to deliver your releases even earlier to these places; this ensures that your music is available the minute anyone hears it and tries to find it using Shazam. There is no harm in it being available on Spotify a few weeks before your release date; if anything, this can work in your favour - you will be making money from people listening here, rather than on SoundCloud and any other free listening channels. You can do this by creating a separate copy of the release in our system, which only has radio edits of the release. This will be used for streaming platforms only as delivering a club mix

Monday or Friday Release Day - Generally, Monday is the day that most labels release their music. Some stores such as Traxsource prefer labels to release on a Friday, especially when they are applying for a feature - this allows them to include your release in their weekend features and can also help you get a head start with your sales during that weekend.

Quality and Consistency - This is very important. Your music should be mixed and mastered to a high standard (we can help with this) coupled with high quality artwork. Artwork is considered just as much as the audio when it comes to a feature; it's worth paying for artwork from places such as Coverartfactory who can offer professional artwork for as little as $15. GET YOUR RELEASE FEATURED:

Feature Request Form - In our 'Support' section you will find an article on how to get your release featured - search the word 'Featured' to find the article. Complete the form no later than 4 weeks before the release date - it is important that you include your marketing plans including any sponsored social media posts and their estimated reach, along with any SoundCloud premiers, blog support etc. Highlight the fact these channels will be used to drive the sales back to the store you are requesting a feature from.

DJ / Radio Support - Only include support from A-list DJs & radio. This is not as important as your marketing strategy but listing some support is useful. If you have any radio support then these DJs are the ones you want to include. No more than 5 - 10 of the best supporting DJs/stations need to be included.

Keep it short - The Beatport & Traxsource Feature Request Form only allows you to type 600 characters. Keep it short and use every character wisely. Only include your best marketing, support and information - the stores don't need your life story.

Give Support - Although you are looking for support from a store, it helps to support them too. Sharing their links to your label page, releases and charts drives sales to their platform. This is taken note of and can also help you acquire support from a store.


BE SOCIAL:

Videos - Video content gets a higher reach on Facebook than an image post so plan to create short videos to promote your release and tag everyone in involved. Rotor Videos are a great company who can help with this and produce a 720p video from $15. These can also be used on your YouTube channel or to promote on other channels.

Be Current - Always keep your online image fresh with hi-res artwork and update it every time you have a new release. It's important to get your artists to do this too as they are representing your label and are part of team. It is easier to supply them with everything they need: Facebook images, banners and Twitter artwork supplied by you are more likely to be used than leaving an artist to do this themselves, after all they are just a busy as you.

Signatures, websites and link backs- It's a very simple but key part of your marketing - make sure that your email signature includes links to your latest release, Soundcloud, Facebook etc. This makes it easier for anyone to check you out and ultimately buy your music if you are speaking with them over email.

Be everywhere but don't be annoying - Keep active on all of your social platforms but choose 2 or 3 posts maximum each day that are related to the same release. It's quite easy to saturate your social media pages, which harms your reach, especially on Facebook. Also if you over cook your feeds, you are simply annoying fans that follow you if they keep seeing the same thing posted over and over again. Use these feeds wisely!


RELEASE DAY

MAXIMISE YOUR EFFORTS:

Strength in numbers - Encourage artists on your label to drive traffic to the sales links of your releases. Anyone who has remixed for you or ever released on the label and is part of your label family and could be on board with your promotion. This is a great way of driving sales to a store without you annoying everyone by only posting yourself. The more interaction and sharing, the more sales you will achieve.

Artist/DJ Charts - Deliver these with your release to Traxsource and Beatport via Label Worx with your release. We can also pitch these for feature on the same day as your release. Fans and customers of these platforms rely on DJ charts to find new music, rather than on the top 100. If a big artist includes your tracks, this can result in your release charting.
