DJ S.K.T - #GoMonthly Q&A
Posted By : Laura Holness

Posted Date : May 5th, 2020
Last month we launched our #GoMonthly campaign and the response has exceeded our expectations. We're giving away three months' free use of our Royalty Worx software to labels who commit to reporting statements on a monthly basis, and at the same time, AudioLock will provide their Back Catalogue scanning and takedown service for free for the same three months.

One of the labels who joined the scheme at the very start was DJ S.K.T's STASHED - we caught up with him to share a different perspective on the campaign, one from a label who has made the switch. Read what S.K.T had to say below, and CLICK HERE for more info about #GoMonthly and to sign up.

Hi Steve - thanks for getting STASHED involved in our #GoMonthly campaign - for those who might not know what it's all about, how would you explain the initiative from a label perspective?

Thanks for having me! The #GoMonthly campaign is pretty simple - at STASHED, we've agreed to change our royalty accounting to every month rather than every quarter or six months, and in return, we get free access to a couple of great services from Label Worx and AudioLock for the next few months. We save some money as a label, and our artists have full transparency when it comes to royalties, hopefully with a payment to look forward to sooner rather than later.

How do you think reporting on a monthly basis benefits artists?

Especially in this crucial time, the more regularly artists can get paid, the better. Label Worx is the first digital distribution company to offer monthly royalty statements to labels, and it makes sense that this can then be passed straight onto the artists.

And how about the benefit to labels?

The benefit to labels is huge. Most of our operational costs are paid monthly - whether that's press, promo or web hosting etc. Having a monthly income via Label Worx means that we can manage our cashflow a lot better, and also budget more accurately per release. These benefits can now all be shared by our artists too.

Some might feel that monthly statements create more work for labels, have you found this to be the case?

Of course, slightly more work will be required each month, but I really believe the benefits of that far outweigh the negatives, so it's worth it in the long term.

We've teamed up with AudioLock for the campaign to make sure labels have access to antipiracy protection - how important is a service like this for digital labels?

Crucial. This could make the difference between a label flourishing or sinking, especially in the early stages so it's well worth the investment.

The music industry is currently facing unprecedented challenges, what positive role do you think labels can play right now?

I think the most crucial thing is support for the artists - whether that's direct support via the label or being able to connect artists with other services who may be able to help assist financially.
I really believe that despite all the tragedy, it's important to keep things as 'normal' as possible release-wise.
We are trying to get as much music out as possible to help to support our artists.

We're all having to make changes to fit into a new normal - how has STASHED adjusted the way it operates?

As well as monthly statements, as a label, we are looking into other forms of revenue streams for artists such as merch, artist sample packs, collabs and online tutorials. In the long run, this will all greatly benefit our artists.

We don't want to focus on the negatives - what positive opportunities are there for labels in a world on lockdown?

Loads! A lot of label owners work full time meaning that they now have a lot more time to nurture their label and set up additional income streams that they otherwise wouldn't have had the time to invest into.

And finally, what can we expect to see/hear from STASHED over the coming weeks?

We have our Stashed Sessions Podcast which we are releasing more often with great guest mixes from a number of Stashed Artists.
On the release side, we have just released a new track from Martin Badder & Space Jump Salute called 'Hey Johnny' which has been getting massive support, Wilkie with 'My Foolish Heart'.
We also have releases coming from Robbie Doherty, MACROLEV, Sara fry & more!
