Are you making the most of Juno Download?

Music can be sold and streamed through a huge variety of different DSPs and platforms, and each one has its own unique customer base and way of working. Therefore, it's important to make sure that you understand how you can make the most of each store's unique opportunities and apply a relevant marketing or promo strategy to your releases in a way which is effective for that particular store.

Today, we wanted to give you an insider's look at how Juno Download works - one of the scene's most respected and trusted stores when it comes to dance music - and who better to give you some tips on how to make sure you're using Juno effectively, than Juno themselves? We grabbed ten minutes with Juno's Jon Lloyd to find out more...

Hi Jon - first of all, what is your role at Juno?

I'm the Marketing and Promotions Manager.

How would you sum up Juno to someone discovering the store for the first time?

Juno Download is one of the world's biggest specialist music download stores. Our focus is on supplying a wide range of music styles for the digital DJ, from Hip Hop to Gabba, and everything in between. We believe we know our music very well and try to promote the best music that we know our customers will enjoy.

Juno has been an iconic vinyl store for a long time - what kind of music is the average JunoDownload customer looking for?

The vinyl and digital markets are quite different when it comes to what sells; something that sells out on vinyl might only make a small amount on the digital side and vice versa.

I believe that because a lot of our customer base knows us via Juno Records, it means they are pretty serious about their music, and looking for more than just the hot track of the week. We try to make sure that we are putting things in front of our customers that will inspire and/or be of interest.

Some of our more niche genres might not sell as well as the big obvious genres, but if something is clearly beautifully produced, doing something a little different or of cultural significance or creative interest, then it's likely something we will push on our store.

How has the lockdown affected sales of different genres? Have you seen customers change their listening habits at all?

I wouldn't say people's listening habits have changed too much during the lockdown, but I see that people have clearly been consuming more media in general, and it would seem music has been a bit of lifeline for a lot of people. I see the beauty of music is its way of affecting people's emotions; I think at some of our most desperate times music can be used as a great way to channel energy or escape to another time and place.

We definitely have noticed chillout and downtempo genres have become more popular while people have been locked in their homes over the past three months.

Do you notice key traits or strategies that successful releases on Juno Download share?

Yes, there are many traits and strategies you can adopt to make your music stand out more. I would say the biggest of these is to engage in your own music community. There are online groups and forums for pretty much every genre that exists - talk to your fans, artists, DJs, contributors, and get to better understand them and your music of preference. The more you understand your music and audience the more success you will have with providing them what they want.

What kind of promo opportunities for labels and releases does JunoDownload offer?

At Juno Download we have many tools to help boost the reach of your music: Firstly, we can promote certain releases with reviews and page banners to help customers find the standout music of that week; we also have our monthly Juno Recommends playlists that are hand selected from some of the most popular and highest-selling releases of the month.
We pick a single and album of the week for exceptional music that stands out or is likely to be a customer favourite, and we offer a 'label focus' for labels currently making waves on the DJ/club scene. Finally, for certain highly anticipated releases we can offer to do a takeover page. Takeovers would include additional content around a release - things like a free downloadable track, a DJ mix, editorial pieces, music videos and more.

All our takeovers and promotional pages can now be viewed on our news page - https://www.junodownload.com/news/

How can labels make sure their releases are getting maximum exposure on the site?

We try to display and promote the music we know our customers will love, which sometimes means some labels can get more love than others, however, we also offer priority promotions for those willing to do an exclusive sales period of their music at Juno Download.

We can offer additional features like promotional site banners and Independent reviews for standout exclusive releases. Labels who are interested in doing and exclusive sales period with us should talk to their label distributor (Label Worx!).

Another great way to promote your music on the Juno Download site is to create and publish regular DJ charts. Like most people, we love to discover new music and introduce the music we love to similar minded people - DJ charts are a great way to show the world that you have great music tastes and are perfect for promoting your own and other artists' music.

What would you say is the most effective way for a label to push their Juno release outside of the Juno store?

Again there are many tools you can use outside of Juno to promote your music, but one of the cheapest and arguably the best is using social media effectively. The following you have on your social channels are basically your best friends, they chose to follow your label or artist page because they like your music so half the work is already done.

Make sure you are always sharing with your following - link your YouTube and Soundcloud previews to your music on Juno Download to ensure you're directing your following to where they can buy your music.

Mixcloud is also a great platform for sharing DJ mixes that automatically produces a DJ chart of all the tracks you use. The buy button on Mixcloud automatically links the tracks to Juno Download so individual tracks can be found and bought quickly.

More info on how to promote your music on and off the Juno Download store can be found here.

Finally, stores are often the first to spot trends and changes in the way people consume music - what advice would you give to labels who are planning out their release schedule for the rest of the year?

I would say press-on full steam ahead and don't hold back, no point waiting until all the clubs and bars are back open to full capacity. The digital music market has never been more healthy and vibrant with more people than ever are looking for new and exciting music to inspire, escape, emancipate and heal. Use your passion to create and evoke emotion for a positive outcome, and as we have seen recently who knows, maybe you could change the world for the better.
