Well, it's fair to say that 2020 has been a mixed year and one that has changed not only our industry but the entire world as we move into 2021. Despite the challenges facing us, we will look back on 2020 as a year to be proud of with some big developments for Label Worx both internally and externally. We've grown as a company and continue to offer world-class label services, and we have collaborated with teams across the industry to launch some really exciting projects throughout the year.
The important thing is that we couldn't have done any of it without you - the labels, artists, PR companies, DSPs and brands we work with every single day!
We're incredibly proud of the Label Worx family and despite everything 2020 has thrown at us, we look forward to working on lots of exciting projects with you all in 2021 and beyond.
Here's a taste of what we achieved this year...
Label Worx: Wrapped
Total Distributed Releases in 2020: 66,291 (+11% on 2019)
Total Amount of Tickets Responded to in 2020: 49,121
New DSP Integrations: 12
In March it was apparent that we were going to have to work from home for the foreseeable future so we started to prepare and equip our staff to be able to work from home. We reviewed various processes and implemented a lot of new ones to ensure our clients received the consistent support levels that we have always strived to provide.
This has been largely successful and we've been really proud of the team effort - the entire team adapted to the changes with a great attitude that saw a minimal impact on operations.
Looking outside the company, we teamed up with Audiolock to run the 'Go Monthly' campaign which aimed to speed up financial support for artists by incentivising labels using Royalty Worx to commit to providing monthly statements to artists. The scheme had a great response from labels and ran for six months offering many artists a much-needed financial lifeline.
We have expanded the team with two new support staff and a new apprentice joining. We also brought in a YouTube Specialist to help us expand our digital video services - expect to see more news on this in 2021.
Processes have been improved, with a core focus on response times. In Q4 we overhauled our internal training program along with testing to make sure our staff are ready and able to answer any of your questions.
It's been busy on this front with 12 new DSP integrations alone and we've put a lot of focus on building store relationships to secure regular support and access to features as they arise.
This year we have significantly expanded our distribution network to the Eastern European market; we work closely with music editors of platforms such as VK - BOOM, Yandex Music, Apple Music Russia, Spotify Russia and Mixupload. We have already seen big growth in sales and new potential for our labels, and we plan to expand to more new territories in the future.
DSPs: Growth from 2019 to 2020
Apple Music: 19%
We have welcomed a host of new labels throughout the year including ChilledCow, Brooklyn Fire, Pets Recordings, Circus Recordings, Bootleg Boy, Stereo Productions, Another Rhythm, Monomark, Medium Rare and even a Snoop Dogg release! :)
In addition to welcoming new labels, we continue to strengthen the relationships we have with our current clients; working with our clients is a long-term commitment for us and we have agreed on new terms with many existing labels as both parties develop and grow.
Virtual Music Conference:
In reaction to the devastating overnight implications of the pandemic, we teamed up with Toolroom and put on the world's first online dance music conference - a one-day event which included guest speakers from Defected, Beatport, Hospital, SoundCloud, Anjunabeats and more. We achieved this in just 6 weeks of planning, from concept to delivery, which was a big achievement.
We sold over 700 tickets, welcomed attendees from 51 different countries, and hosted 55 guest speakers providing over 13 hours' worth of content.
To top it off we raised over £8K for charities supporting the music industry during the pandemic.
Mixtank is another big project that we will be developing throughout 2021 - we kicked things off quickly at the start of the year following Leftwing & Kody's launch at the office, we continued the live streams in a virtual environment and have been continuously building the playlists up to keep the brand awareness.
Behind the scenes, we spent the summer busy figuring out ways to continue the launch plan of our education platform. It was a tricky situation as we could no longer send in film crews, but one which led to us developing a remote alternative - the 'Studio In A Box'.
We can now deliver the equipment required to film a production course directly to the artist's studio and film remote sessions. Mixtank Learn officially launched at the end of November with courses now available from BOT, Jacky, Huxley, SHOSH, Mark Maitland, Madvilla, Joseph Edmund and James Hurr, and plenty more lined up for 2021.
We couldn't have done any of this without you - the labels, artists, PR companies, DSPs and brands we work with every single day! We're incredibly proud of the Label Worx family and despite everything 2020 has thrown at us, we look forward to working on lots of exciting projects with you all in 2021 and beyond!
